Summary
The purpose of this surveillance was to make an early warning of highly pathogenic H5N1 and to realize the epidemiology of avian influenza in Taiwan 's wild birds. In 2006, a total of 4,541 specimens collected from wild birds of Taipei , Taichung , Chunghua, Chayi, Tainan , Koushong, Yielan, Hwalien, Penhu, and Kingmen were examined for avian influenza viruses.
Thirty-nine viruses were isolated (0.86% isolated rate) and subtyped as H1N3 (n = 2), H3N8 (n = 3), H4N6 (n = 17), H4N7 (n = 1), H7N3 (n = 1), H9N6 (n = 1), H9N9 (n = 1), H10N3 (n = 11) and H10N4 (n = 2). Most of these viruses were isolated from duck fecal specimens; but two viruses, H3N8 and H10N3, were isolated from that of egrets. One low pathogenic strain (IVPI 0.0) of H7N3 virus was isolated from wild ducks in Chayi of Taiwan. In conclusion, H5N1 was not isolated in this study. This indicated that the spread of this virus into Taiwan through the migratory birds was not occurred in this period.
