Summary

Characteristics of three tl'&Itimissible gastroenteritis ( TGE)virm field virulent strains (Gut origin:Ames #40, CN and Miller), three low cell culture-passaged straim (An-es #4010, CN-10 and Miller-10), three high cell culture-passaged strains ( SH-30, N,b-28 and Miller-60) , and three vaccinal strains ( SP, 'ID and Syntex) were studied to find the differ-entiation in plaque sizes in McClurkin swine testis cell cu-lture among the four groups of vims strains. There were clear differences in plaque size when the strains were c-ompared: The viruses of gut origin have plaque sizes ra-ugiug from 0.5 to 2.0 mm in diameters, low cell culture-passaged strain11 have plaque sires ranging from LO to 3.0 mm, high eel.I culture-passaged strains induced plaques larger than 3.0 mm, whereas vaccinal strains incbced plaques that w· ere sllllller than 1.0 mm, The data soageat that the plaque me-thod be mefal as in vitro marta,r in the differentiation of TGE vims strains.
