Summary |
To prevent bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) from entering our country, we have established the BSE laboratory diagnostic techniques, including the laboratory biosafty, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, Western immunoblot assay, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We have also applied those techniques to the continuous surveillance program of BSE. A total of 127 cattle brains were collected from the abattoirs, rendering plants, and M. tuberculosis-contaminated farms located in 10 counties of Taiwan during 1998 to 2001. Cattle developed central nervous signs or showed other symptoms were also included. All the brains were examined and present negative results.
