Research Information Establishment of animal drug assay facilities for fish vaccines

Plan Year: 2006
Taiwan has an excellent reputation for technology in aquaculture all around the world. Recently, a new and prevailing technology for cultivation of high valuable species, such as cobia and grouper, with offshore aquaculture, has been successfully developed, and that leads us to have superiority in competition in this field. Except improvement of aquacultural environment and facilities, proper vaccination for disease control and prevention is another way to decrease the loss of fish diseases and to increase the livability. And research and development of fish vaccines is also one of main areas which are now proceeded aggressively in biotechnology in Taiwan. Responsibilities of this Animal Drug Assay Branch include the inspection of all veterinary medicinal products. Therefore, it is an urgent task for us to set up the facilities as well as inspection methods for fish vaccines. As foreseeing the future needs, this mid-term project was designed and aimed to set up the necessary drug assay facilities, inspection methods and standard operating procedures at the central authority level for vaccines used in aquaculture. The project was schemed for four successive years since 2005, and possible vaccines for three of the main species were selected and targeted at high priority. During this fiscal year, main action plans include: (1) the construction of assay facilities, (2) a test program planned to familiar operations of facilities which were finished last years, and (3) a training program designed for upgrading the capability of our personnel in fish vaccine assays.
