Comparison between Domestic and Foreign Inspection Standards of Inactivated Swine Enzootic Pneumonia Vaccine

Summary

Swine enzootic pneumonia (SEP) is characterized by a high infection rate affecting 30~93% of swine herds, but with low mortality rate in Taiwan. The chronic respiratory disease infection by SEP not only decreases the growth of pigs but also causes a great economic loss in pig industry. Current strategy to prevent of SEP in Taiwan is to add antibiotic in feed, but vaccination is another option. The current inspection methods for each batch of inactivated SEP vaccine is based on the section 69 in chapter III of animal drugs inspection standards that were set nearly twenty years ago. With the rapid progress of technological development, novel formulas and new testing methods have been developed in the world. We outlined the inspection methods of inactivated SEP vaccine in Taiwan and compared these methods employed in European Union (EU), Japan, and United States. The present study provided useful information for further revising SEP vaccine inspection standards to be commutable with other national standards.
