The outhealc of Itvine nonsuppurative encephahtis were ohcervei in southern wunt of Taiwan in 1985. At that tine. 1024 he&ls of cattle in lfarrns were investigated in Chiayi county. Twenty-thr of 1024 (2.25%) heads showed clinical sings of the disease. Five of 23 died and 12of23 were slau,ghoi Furthermore, one Bovine Papular Stornatitis (BPS) vinis was isolated. The vims was used to aerest the antigen for agar gel utipitanon (AGP) t for anti&xly prevalence investigation. The total of 2313 semm samp ot>flectd from 131 farms lccatl In 14 different counties in 1987 were tested by AGP pcxsitive reaction was obina{ on 457 sthum samples from 72 farms. The rults indicati that BPS had keen extensively present in most counties and the positive rat was 52.02 and 47.69% in Tattung county and Kaohsiung county rescwively.
The cattle were extriinentaUy thcculard with isolated BPSV. The ulceration was okerved on the sit of inccuiation and nonsuppuxative lesion of kuain was also noticsl. This was the first report on the virus isolation and serological investigation of BPSV in Taiwan,
