Isolation of Newcastle Disease viruses from Wild and Pet Birds in Taiwan in 1995-1996

Summary

The goal of this investigation was to evidence the pet and wild birds infected or carried ND viruses after the Newcastle disease (ND) outbreak in chicken in Taiwan in 1995. Samples collected from animal hospital, canary breeder, bird's garden, wild birds emergency hospital, raceing pigeons and pigeon breeder etc. 242 samples were gotten from fresh faece, cloaca! swabs or organs of dead birds. Bird specieses included wild birds 91, psittacines 17, pigeons 66, canaries 58 and other pet birds 10 samples. Each of the sample emulsion was inoculated into specifc pathogen free chicken embryos to isolate viruses. Useing hemagglutination test, electric microscopy and ND hemaglutination inhibility test to identify NDV. Finally 2 NDV were isolated from one psittacine and one pigeon. Isolated viruses were velogenic viscerotropic Newcastle disease viruses identically.
