Rabies study in Taiwan, 2013-2014

Abstract

The rabies diagnosis laboratory has been set up and implemented the surveillance of animal rabies in Animal Health Research Institute since 1999. We improved our surveillance system and diagnosis methods of rabies continually by inviting foreign experts to Taiwan and dispatching researcher to the reference laboratories. To evaluate the diagnosis ability of our rabies diagnosis laboratory, we participated the "Inter-laboratory Test for Rabies diagnosis" held by European Union Reference Laboratory in September, 2014 and passed the test. According to the surveillance data at present, the disease is still restricted in the wild ferret-badgers (Melogale moschata subaurantiaca), except a house shrew (Suncus murinus) and a puppy bitten by a rabies-infected ferret-badger. The positive rates of rabies were 38.27% (403/1,053) in ferret-badgers, 0.58% (1/171) in shrew, and 0.05% (1/1,861) in dog respectively. Based on the nucleoprotein of rabies virus isolated in Taiwan ferret-badger, the result of phylogenetic analysis showed that these isolates were clearly divided into two groups namely: (1) the Middle and Southern group (TW-MS): Nantou, Taichung, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung; and (2) the Eastern group (TW-E): Hualien, Taitung, Pingtung. Serum samples from domestic dogs in Taiwan were detected the antibodies against rabies virus by using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) during 2012-2014. Results demonstrated that the sero-positive rates of domestic dogs were 42% (239/571) in 2012, 53% (260/494) in 2013, and 62% (233/375) in 2014 respectively. However, sero-positive rates in the Eastern and Northern counties of Taiwan were only 45% (9/20) and 50% (63/127) respectively in this year. To prevent the spread of rabies epidemic in Taiwan, authority needs to pay much attention to increase the vaccination coverage rate of dog in these areas.

Veterinary Service Satisfaction and Educational Training Model Research

Abstract

In order to understand our institute education and training effectiveness and satisfaction, we surveyed three categories questionnaire in 2013. 1. 12 regular seminar questionnaire surveys. There were 404 copies of questionnaires and 301 returned (response rate 74.5%). The average satisfaction rate was 92.85%; 2. In student dormitory satisfaction survey 279 copies of questionnaires were issued, and 177 returned (response rate 63.44%). The average satisfaction rate was 93%; 3. In research reports and newsletter readership satisfaction survey, 915 copies of questionnaires were issued, and 199 returned (response rate 21.75%). The average satisfaction rate was 93.28%.

To investigate the training needs and industrial difficulties of Taiwan's poultry industry from July to October in 2013, we sent 1,996 copies of questionnaires, and 131 returned (response rate 6.56%). Biosecurity and health management issues were in great demand, followed by feed management. We hold 2 classes of farmers academy including swine and poultry farmer in 2014 and investigated the training effectiveness and satisfaction. In the future, we will survey the training effectiveness of post-training continuously.

Development of Trivalent Live Vaccine against Waterfowl Viral Diseases

Abstract

Both waterfowl parvovirus infection and duck viral hepatitis are important lethal infectious diseases in goslings and ducklings. Those diseases cause high morbidity and high mortality and those recovering ducklings with stunted growth result in serious economic losses. We had completed development of bivalent waterfowl parvovirus vaccine and attenuated duck hepatitis live vaccine. However, the current trend in vaccine development is multivalent vaccine, the proportion of multiple antigens and virus titers make development a challenge. In this study both waterfowl parvovirus and duck hepatitis virus were propagated in tissue cultures and mixed with different proportions to assess the corresponding antibody titers. Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV) and goose parvovirus (GPV) were attenuated in duck or goose fibroblast cells while duck hepatitis virus (DHV) attenuated in duck kidney cells. Those three strain viruses mixed with a certain proportion were given to one-day-old Muscovy ducklings intramuscularly .Their serum neutralization (SN) antibody titers against GPV and MDPV have reached 1:1280 and 1:640 respectively on 14 DPI (days post inoculation). Also, the virus neutralization index (NI) has reached 4.0 against DHV. The test results have met the national assay standards for vaccines - the SN titers against MDPV or GPV> 1:32 and against DHV NI >3.0). In conclusion, the use of multivalent vaccine can reduce repeated labor costs for handling and injection stresses on ducks. After commercialization, AHRI can provide waterfowl breeding farmers with more vaccine choices.

Execution the Project of “International exchange and cooperation on bird migration and risk assessment of avian influenza/establishment of the regional partnerships for emerging zoonoses” in Russian

Abstract

We visited Federal State Budgetary Institution Federal Centre for Animal Health FGI ARRIAHin Russia during June 16th – 21st, 2014 to execute the project of “International exchange and cooperation on bird migration and risk assessment of avian influenza/establishment of the regional partnerships for emerging zoonoses”. We expected to exchange both sides experience of disease surveillance, disease control policy and the related researches. The head of Laboratory for Epidemiology and Monitoring Dr. Irza Viktor Nikolayevich, spoke about “The outbreaks of high pathogenic avian influenza and the subsequent monitoring and prevention in Russia since 2005”. Dr. Artem Andriyasov introduced “Avian Influenza Molecular Diagnostics in ARRIAH (2010-2013)” and showed us the analysis data of wild bird influenza. We presented the information of avian influenza in Taiwan. In this visit, we have known the management of disease outbreaks and the researches of wild bird influenza in Russia. Both sides hope that we will keep in touch and have cooperation in the future.
