Development of an Inactivated Vaccine against Streptococcus iniae Infection for Fish

Abstract
Streptococcosis is a common disease in fish and responsible for significant economic losses in aquaculture. Streptococcus iniae, S. agalactiae, and Lactococcus garvieae are commonly isolated from fish streptococcosis. The prevention and control for fish streptococcosis includes administration of antimicrobial and vaccination. However, usage of antimicrobial agent would cause the emergence of drug resistance, and commercial fish streptococcus vaccine is not available in Taiwan. The objective of the present study was to develop an inactivated vaccine against S. iniae for fish. For small-scale preparation of seed strain, twenty-four hours shaking culture with brain heart infusion broth could achieve to concentration of 1x10^9 cfu/ml. For formalin inactivation, 100 rpm shaking with 0.5% of formalin at 4℃ for 48 hours would kill all S. iniae completely. According to the above condition, a batch of inactivated S. iniae vaccine was prepared and grouper fish were used for safety and efficacy test. After two weekpost immunization, no fish in vaccination group showed adverse reaction. By challenge of seed stain, all fish of vaccination group survived, but the mortality rate of control group was 90%. The results revealed that the prepared inactivated vaccine could successfully induce immune protection against S. iniae infection, and other species of fish will be further tested for safety and efficacy.

2012 Report on 22nd International Pig Veterinary Society (IPVS) Congress

Abstract
International pig veterinary society (IPVS) is a prestigious international congress held every two years. The 22nd IPVS congress, held in Jeju, Korea, had included 277 oral presentations and 731 posters on the issues of swine viral diseases, bacterial diseases, emerging diseases, reproduction/breeding, production/nutrition, food safety and animal welfare. The theme topics of this meeting were porcine circovirus diseases, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome ,and swine influenza. In this conference, we have presented two studies which were
“Identification of conformational and antigen-specific epitopes on E2 glycoprotein of classical swine fever virus” and “Reduction of classical swine fever virus-specific cell proliferative response of porcine peripheral blood mononuclear cells by porcine circovirus type 2” By the way, we also communicated with other professors worldwide. Through attending this congress would increase fame of our institute and opportunities of international cooperation. Furthermore, the current information from IPVS is crucial for us to understand the epidemic situation in the world and more studies of swine diseases.
