The Molecular Epidemiology Study of Porcine Teschovirus in Taiwan
Abstract
Porcine teschovirus (PTV) causes the porcine disease that immerged in recent years. Basing on the results of the detection of the sera antibody against PTV, it showed that more than 70% of the swine population in Taiwan were positive in herds. On the other hand, the results of the diagnostic service project of swine viral diseases that was performed last year showed that the isolation rate for PTV was higher than that of the pathogens of the other swine viral diseases. It revealed that PTV in Taiwan exists commonly in herds. Moreover, there are eleven distinct serotypes of PTV. In order to understand the number of PTV serotypes and their distribution in Taiwan, we had collected fecal samples from pig farms around Taiwan. We had isolated PTV using PK-15 cells and then, RT-PCR had been performed to amplify the VP1 region of PTV. These had then been followed by sequencing and its subsequent analysis and from the results of these, we had created a phylogenetic tree for all the PTV isolates that we had obtained. The results of the phylogenetic tree pointed that among the 78 isolated PTVs, there were 10 different serotypes except for serotype 5 and these serotypes were distributed randomly around Taiwan.

Surveillance for Aquatic Animal Diseases in 2008
Abstract
Fifty-six fish farms for export were surveyed with a total of 6743 specimens examined in 2008.  In marine fish, the positive percentages of examined samples were 2% for iridovirus and 36% for nodavirus.  The net cage-cultured cobia was found infected with iridovirus. In freshwater fish, the positive percentage for koi herpesvirus was 7% in koi; none of viral infection was found in tropical fish.  In penaeid shrimp, it was 69% positive for infectious hypodermal and haematopoietic necrosis virus, 6% positive for white spot disease virus, 3% positive for Taura syndrome virus and 22% for yellowhead disease virus.  In mollusks, none of the OIE notifiable diseases was found in abalone.
