Study on Culture Conditions in a Fermenter for Production of Riemerella anatipestifer

Abstract

The study aimed to improve production process for large scale production of Riemerella anatipestifer bacterin. Various control parameters and nutrients addition were tested in a fermenter. The results showed that the optimized fermentation process has enhanced 2-3.75 fold productivity in contrast to incubator shaker, and additional nutrients supplemented in a fermenter has increased 1.43-1.7 fold more the number of bacteria. From manufacturing 100,000 doses of trivalent RA bacterin, production by fermentation has decreased 2.2-fold culture medium uses and speeded up 2-fold preparation time as well as greatly cut down manpower consumption. With improvement in centrifugation, it has also saved 3.08-fold purification time. In addition, the bacterin manufactured in a fermenter stored in a refrigerator for 27 months could still provide enough protection against serotype 1 and 2 challenges in ducks. The study finding would apply to commercial bacterin production to lower production cost and promote market competition of vaccine in waterfowl industry.

Course Report: Comparative Pathology of Aquatic Animals

Abstract

In January 15th, 2016, I applied a course hold by School of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, called AQUAVET® II: Comparative Pathology of Aquatic Animals. The course period was May 29th through Jun 10th in Roger Williams University in Rhode Island. It included normal anatomy of bivalves - introduction to pathology of molluscan diseases, invertebrate pathology - diseases of bivalves, salmon industry in Scotland and elsewhere in Europe, parasites in aquatic animals, emerging viral fish diseases in the US, anatomy and diseases of cephalopods and opistobranchs, using animals in research, anatomy and diseases of crustaceans and limulus, fish diagnostics and techniques (WET LAB), toxicologic pathology of fish, fish as lab animals, neoplasia of fish, fish hematology, diseases of coldwater aquaculture species - infectious and non-infectious, introduction to diseases of aquaculture species – Warmwater catfish, corals, overview of the principal infectious diseases found in farmed penaeid shrimp. In the future, I would like to make disease diagnosis using what I learned from AQUAVET® II.

Regional Seminar for OIE National Focal Points for Veterinary Laboratories

Abstract

The Regional Seminar for OIE National Focal Points for Veterinary Laboratories was held in Jeju, Republic of Korea, on 5-7 April 2016. Twenty five Participants from 24 OIE member countries attended this seminar. The objectives of this seminar are: i) to introduce OIE National Focal Points for Veterinary Laboratories to their role and duties as set out in the Terms of Reference in support of the OIE Delegate to fulfill his/her rights and responsibilities to OIE; ii) to present relevant OIE international standards and familiarise them with current or developing standards, as relevant, in the OIE Terrestrial and Aquatic Animal Health Manuals and Codes; iii) to provide the OIE National Focal Points on Veterinary Laboratories with tools to comply with OIE standards, implement activities and transfer knowledge at all levels of the laboratory network; and iv) to inform on ongoing OIE projects in their sphere of competence.

The expected outcomes of this seminar are: i) more access to capacity-building opportunities for district, provincial and national laboratories; ii) improved and rationalised capacities and practices within the national laboratory network; iii) better response to outbreaks within the national laboratory network.

Work Overview of Technical Service Office

Abstract

   What the technical service office works for is extremely complicated. In general, its current load can be categorized as: (1) documents/e-mails receiving and processing; (2) management of library and editing and publication of technical reports; (3) management and consultation of innovation and intellectual property associated affairs; (4) arrangement of veterinary extension education, conferences, meetings, and reception of various domestic and foreign visitors; (5) general affairs and other occasional missions which cannot be categorized as the responsibilities of other divisions of this institute. ; and (6) superior orders.

In today’s talk, the daily work of the technical service office is introduced and analyzed, and experience of how to work with such a complicated and heavy-loaded system are shared.
