Serological Surveys on Goatpox in Taiwan in 2009
Abstract
The first goatpox case occurred in Taiwan in 2008.  In 2009, to evaluate the current status of goatpox infections in Taiwanese goats, an in-house indirect fluorescence assay (IFA) technique was developed to carry out serological surveys for goatpox. Air dried OA3-t cells, infected with 103.3TCID50 of a local goat poxvirus isolate, in 96 well plates, were used as the source of antigens in IFA. Goat serum samples collected for the FMD monitoring program in 2009 were used. A total of 2,604 sera from 91 goat farms in 21 counties were tested for antibodies to goatpox byIFA. Results showed that none of them were positive for the antibodies against goat poxvirus.

A Study on the Pathogenesis for Porcine Teschovirus
Abstract
Teschen-Talfan disease is also known as Teschen disease, poliomyelitis suum or porcine enterovirus encephalomyelitis. The disease was initially observed in Czechoslovakia in 1929, and is caused by certain strains of porcine teschoviruses (PTV), classified to the family of Picornaviridae. The most severe nervous lesions were found to occur in the brainstem from the hypothalamus through the medulla, and decreased in intensity and diffuseness down the spinal cord. In the porcine outbreak of Enterovirus Encephalomyelitis in Japan in 2002, no PTV was isolated from the cerebrum or spinal cord of affected pigs, but it was isolated from a clinically normal piglet. This suggested that many infections caused by this virus are asymptomatic and that the epidemiology and mechanism of PTV neurovirulence still need to be determined. In Taiwan, PTV strains were isolated and identified from clinical cases submitted to Animal Health Research Institute from 2000 to 2009 respectively. Based on these test results, it wasconcluded that teschovirus infection may have occurred widely in the Taiwanese pig population. In this study, experiments were carried out to realize thepathogenesis of porcine teschovirus—results of which will lead to further investigation in the localization of PTV-1 by RT-PCR, and IHC methodology, as well as its potential causes

The safety and efficacy tests of goat pox attenuated vaccine
Abstract
Goat pox cases have been remerging in Taiwan since April 2010. Till July 5, there were 260 farms and 18,198 goats slaughtered. From 25th of June, goat pox vaccine has been allowed to be used in each county. The purpose of the act is to control the outbreak within 2 to 3 weeks. In order to secure the safety and efficacy of the attenuated live vaccine, KSGP 0240, imported from Jordan, the study used mutton and milk goats to conduct safety test, efficacy test and potency test for the vaccine. The results show that the vaccine is qualified in every test. The result of the efficacy test is in accordance with the OIE guideline, which states that the titers of virus neutralizing index in immune mutton and milk goats must be 102.5 times higher than that in the un-immune mutton and milk goats. The vaccine is also safe to mutton and milk goats according to the results of field test. It means the vaccine will not affect the milk yield. There was no abortion and deadbirth record in the pregnant dairy goat in this study.
