Summary

Six ponies of 3 to4years old were inportad form US in April of 1991, Four weeks later, five of them were sick and one eventually dead. The clinical signs included fever and mucopurulent nasal discharge, The grc6s lesions of the dead pony included congestion in the spleen, stinach, cecum, endndiurn, lung, and trachea. Histopathological examinations revealed severe vascluar congestion and lymphcxyticcuffing in the ham. The attempt to isolate pothogen was fail. The survived five ponies had a neutralizing antibcdy titers of 1:8 to 1:32 against subtype 1 equine
herces virus-i (EFIV-1) A serolgical survey on EHV-1 infeetion was onducted using the antigen prepared from Ky-D strain EFIV- 1 virus by the agar gel pthpitation (AGP)estinl99l.Theresultindicatlthatout595serumsamples cofleotdfrom 13 counties, 194 (32.6%) serum samples from 12 counties had the AGP antibcdies against EHV-1. N 1993 serological survey, a total of 1(6 serum samples were collected from 12 counties. Ainongthern, 59 (55.7%) horses from lOoounties had neutralizing antibcdy against EHV-1. Thus the EHV-1 infection already xist in the horse population in Taiwan.
