Summary

Nonsuppurative encephalitis and oongenital ab olToalites ses have cccurred in bcvine herds in Chaiyi county in Taiwan, Four strains of Akabane viruse and foru stains of Chuzan virus were isoJ from heperinii Mcxd among 112 cattle which were fei in 18 dairy farms in Chaiyi county. From the results, we susi that the Akakene virus and Cuuz3n virus might e the major pathogen causing nonsuppntative encephalitis cases in cattle. The serologicai survey was conducted on the anti&dy against Akabane disease and Chuzan disase in 1 %3. The anti&dy jxEtive sate against Alcabane disease in 1652 heads of cattle of Taiwan was % recent. The rc€itive rate of Quzandiseasin1679headsofcattlewas91%.ActxgingtothisMghmorbility,itis believed thaat cattle inf&i by Chuzan virus were very common. For the investigation of isolated virus in Taiwan, the sera of irqad cattle which was frJing in Miaoli andShinchung county were also &iectoi anti&dy against Akabane disease nad Chuzan disease. The result of Akabane disease was 1? heads to show tive reaction amongl53hearls inMiaolicounty (poGitiveraell%), and2heads toshowitivereaction among 58 heads in Shinchung county (pc6itive rate 3%). Otherwise, no antibcwly against Chuzan disease was ceDtei in these frn1xDa-td cattle. As the conclusion, the isolati viruses may It an endemic pathogenic agent in Taiwan. The eventon licy chould includ develooping vaixane with endemic virus strain to prow cattle in Taiwan.
