Summary

MDBK cell hne, feil bovine &]e cells, feil bovine muscle cells, fetal bovine kindey cells, and fetal bovine nasal muccea (BNM) cells were testl for their ability to support the growth of the bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus. It was found that BVD virus had highest virus titers (10 TCI]JhnL) when it was grown on BNM cells. Four multivalent inactivated baccines composed of infestious bovine rhinotr&Dheins (ER), BVD, and parainfluenza 3 (P1-3) were pexed. They were either inactivatei by 0.2% vkformalinor0.1M BElandwexeadd&withoneofthetwoadjuvant (10% aluminum phosphate gel or 20% DEAFrDextt). The concentrations of the antigens in the vaccine Iffore inactivati and adjuvanted were as follov,ings: ER virus, 10 TCflJhnL; BVD virus, 10 TCflJhnL; PE-3 virus, 10 TCflJhnL. Eleven calves were frnmunEd with 5rnL of one of the four inactivated vaccines when they were six months old. Four weeks laer-,all of them xeeivftI a snd dces. Two weeks after the last injution, it was found that the immuniad calves had an ER neutrali ng antibody titers from 1:4 to 1:256, BVD neutralizing antibody titers from 1:64 to 1:4096, and P1- 3 hemagglutination- inhibition antibody titers from 1:32 to 1:128. Formalin inactivated, DEAB-dextran adjuvanti vaccine had highest ER antibody respone; formalin inactivated, aluminum phosphate gel adjuvanti vaccine had highest BVD antibody response and lowest P1-3 antibody response (P4)05).
