| Summary |
Since 1967, bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) virus has caused several epidemics in Taiwan in 1967, 1984, 1989, 1996 and 1999, These records showed that the time intervals of each epidemic were decreased and the cxurses of each epidemic were increased. hi this study, 3,862 cattle sen were collected from 16 prefectures in Taiwan during March and June 2(0). The mean titers of serum neutralizing (SN) antibodies
were 21.43 in March and 80,03 in June. When the protective level of SN antibodies was set at = 32X, only 26,43% of herds kcati in the protective range in March and &ii in June. To prevent epidemic in cattle, the herd immunity neni to he higher thaji2t)% of the animals with antibody titers =32X. We suggest that the antibody levels are not sufficient to prevent the herds from BEF infection in Septemher and Octoher without further vaccination.
